Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project

Android is a mobile phone platform based on the Linux Operating System developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance.
The unveiling of the Android platform on 5 November 2007 announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 34 hardware,software and telecom for mobile devices.When released in 2008, most of the Android platform will be made available under the Apache free-software and open-source license.

  • Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent)
  • Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent)
  • Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE

To support you in your efforts, Google has launched the Android Developer Challenge, which will provide $10 million in awards -- no strings attached -- for great mobile apps built on the Android platform.
