Optical Illusions

Illusions of the senses tell us the truth about perception
-Teuber,1960
Illusions are fascinating to most people. Some of the illusions have been known since antiquity. The scientific study of illusions dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century when scientists got interested in perception. Since then there has been enduring interest, and illusions have been used as tools in the study of perception. An important strategy in finding out how perception operates is to observe situations in which mis-perceptions occur. By carefully altering the stimuli and testing the changes in visual perception psychologists tried to gain insight into the principles of perception.

An optical illusion(also called a visual illusion) is characterized by visually perceived images that are deceptive or misleading. Most effects have their basis in the visual pathway, not in the optics of the eye. There are so many websites dedicated to optical illusions. Some pictures are here for reference and for detailed description you can check out the links given at the bottom of this post.

Anamorphism

An Anamorphoscope, a conical or cylindrical mirror is placed on the drawing or a painting to transform a flat distorted image into a three dimensional picture that can be viewed from many angles. The deformed image is painted on a plane surface surrounding the mirror. By looking uniquely into the mirror, the image appears undeformed. Anamorphoscopes were invented in China and brought to Italy in the 16th century, about the time Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci were mastering 3D and discovering slant anamorphosis.Recently I have seen the movie ANAMORPH which inspired me to get a look at this field. Some anamorphisms...

Ambigram
An Ambigram is a sentance or a single word that is written in such way, that it becomes readable even if you rotate it. John Langdon is a father of ambigrams. He did work for The Da Vinci Code movie, and to my knowledge, he was an inspiration to Dan Brown for his main character called Robert Langdon. John's ambigrams apeared not only in the movie, but also in original David Brown's books: "Angels & Demons" and "The DaVinci Code".Check out these cool ambigrams..

The name Google is a spelling error. The founders of the site, Larry page and Sergey Brin , thought they were going for Googol .. Googol is the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros. Initially, Larry and Sergey Brin called their search engine BackRub , named for its analysis of the of the web's "back links." The reason the google page is so bare is because t he founder didn't know HTML and just wanted a quick interface. The company's first office was in a garage , in Menlo Park, California . If programming languages were cars...

There have been many comparisons between programming languages and different aspects of human life by many individuals .This is one of them , a comparison between programming languages and cars. This post is inspired from the article originally written by Mike Vanier. This is an update to an old series of jokes about computer languages being like cars. Just go through this list and see if you can come out with your own list of comparisons. Here goes the list... The list Ada is a tank. A butt-ugly tank that never breaks down. People laugh uncontrollably if you tell them you drive Ada, but really, do you want to be driving a sports car in a war zone? Assembly Language is a bare engine; you have to build the car yourself and manually supply it with gas while it's running, but if you're careful it can go like a bat out of hell. Assembly Language : YOU are the car. Basic is a simple car useful for short drives to the local shops. Once popular with learner drivers, it has recen...

Find Out if your Computer is Secretly Connecting to Web

If you are trying to track down why your computer is running so slowly, try using this simple DOS command from Digital Inspiration to uncover a possible problem: • Type cmd in your Windows Run box. • Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt" and press enter. • After say 2 minutes, press Ctrl+C. • Type "activity.txt" on the command line to open the log file in notepad (or your default text editor) This .txt file will have a record of everything that has made an Internet connection in the last couple of minutes; you can then check your task manager to find out where it is and take care of it. The file activity.txt will have a log of all process that made a connection to the Internet in the last two minutes. It will also show which process connected to which website in this time. And not just the web browsers (like iexplore.exe or opera.exe), the log will also show your IM clients, download managers, email programs or any software that requires a net connection. Scroll th...
